In Gear with the Minister:
Dr. Eugene Lawton
In these turbulent days, trouble is everywhere in our world. We are living in an angry generation. There are angry young men, angry women, angry boys and girls, angry cats and angry dogs. Have I a witness here? Anger is excited when a horse kicks up, when a serpent hisses, when we dash our foot against a stone or when a man raises his hand to strike another. What is it that makes a mind wild like a tiger, furious as a hungry lion, and greedy for revenge. IT IS ANGER! As modern man conquers outer space, he seems to lose conquest of the inner space of self. He masters what is outside of him, but he seems to become enslaved to the passions inside of him. He knows how to control the universe, but he does not know how to control himself. Water becomes a power only when it is harnessed. And man will never be happy until he has been able to put that beast that is in him in orbit around God.
THERE ARE TWO KINDS OF ANGER, THE BLAZING KIND, AND THE BROODING KIND. Some of us are like gunpowder, the least little spark starts an explosion. If we could only see ourselves, our eyebrows contracted, our eyes flashing, our features distorted. Some people smolder with temper, like embers of a fire when there is no flame–silent and solemn we sulk over some wrong–real or imaginary that has been done to us. Anger, bad temper, resentment, hostility can wreck the health of the body and the mind. They are as likely to cause disease as a germ. Any doctor will tell you about illness brought about by mishandled emotions. Death from an emotion produced stroke is not unknown.
THIS DEADLY SIN DESTROYS MARRIAGES! Bad temper has been the beginning of the end of many of marriage. Things said in anger that should have never been said. The marriage regrets it, the marriage is a disappointment. Things are said that can never be unsaid, that linger on in the mind through the years that cannot be wiped out by boxes of chocolate and dozens on roses. The Bible says, “LET NOT THE SUN GO DOWN UPON YOUR WRATH.” (Ephesians 4:26) This will help save many marriages.
THIS DEADLY SIN DESTROYS INDIVIDUALS. Anger has broken homes, sent innocent men to prison, crushed hearts, divided families, and sent some to an early grave.
