Dr. Eugene Lawton
This topic conveys the glorious truth that the church belongs to Jesus Christ. Have you reflected on the idea that all the things that Jesus might have claimed while living in this world; there is only one thing that he did claim–His church. This traveling preacher tells us a lot about himself when he said, “The foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the son of man hath nowhere to lay his head.”- (Mt. 8:20), he was saying; have no house.” There was no house, no piece of land that he claimed as his. John, that apostle of love, tells us, “He came unto his own and his own received him not.” (John 1:11) He was saying that his own people rejected him. While living under the blue sky of Palestine, Jesus said that he had no family. “My mother and my brethren, my sisters, I have none. Those who do the will of God, they are my mother, brother and sister. (Matt. 16:18) He claimed no house, no nation and no family, but he did claim His church. Why did the Savior of the world make such a claim? Upon what grounds could he say, “MY CHURCH”?
THE TRUE CHURCH WAS BUILT BY JESUS CHRIST. (Mt. 16:18, I Cor. 3:11) How did you build it Lord? Did you go to the lumber yard and get some material and construct a building. No, No! I went all the way to Calvary that I might build my church. (Acts 20:28) Ephesians 5:25 informs us that Christ loved the church and gave himself for it. There are churches whose founders and builders are men. A Peace church was established recently as a protest to the war in Viet Nam. There are many churches that have been established by men and there is no salvation in them. The church of Christ goes back to Christ. (Psalm 127:1)
JESUS CHRIST IS THE HEAD OF THE BIBLE CHURCH. He is the Lord over the church. (Eph. 1:21-23) There is no one person or group of persons on this earth who constitutes the head of the New Testament church. Since Christ is the head, he gives the orders. The rules and regulations for His church are founded in the Bible. The Lord wants His church to sing without instrumental music (Eph. 5:19); take the Lord’s Supper every Sunday (Acts 20:7); to teach that baptism is essential to salvation (Mark 16:16).
